Zinc stearate is an organometallic compound obtained from the reaction between stearic acid and zinc salts. It is available as a white, soft powder and is one of the most widely used types of stearate salts in various industries. Light zinc stearate is insoluble in polar solvents, but is soluble in aromatic compounds and chlorinated hydrocarbons when heated. This property makes it a suitable option for formulations that require high chemical stability and optimal thermal performance.
Main applications of zinc stearate:
One of the main applications of light zinc stearate is in the production of various polymers and rubbers. This material is used as a mold release agent and external lubricant in the production of polymer parts.
Zinc stearate is easily combined with polyolefins and in some of them it plays a role as an acid scavenger and process aid.
In paints and coatings, zinc stearate is used as a pigment suspender and grindability enhancer. It also increases the matting and improves the surface quality of the paint layer.
In the construction industry, this substance is used as a water repellent for plaster and ready-made mortar additives. Zinc stearate creates a soft, smooth, low-friction surface in the final products and is very useful for transparent and heat-sensitive polymers such as PS, PE, PVC, PA, SMC and BMC by providing high thermal stability.
Zinc stearate is used as a lubricant in the production of sandpaper and coated papers. This feature reduces friction, improves abrasion performance and increases the surface durability of the product.
Due to its non-toxic nature and high physiological compatibility, light zinc stearate is used as a permitted additive in the pharmaceutical and food industries in permitted amounts. It also plays the role of a lubricant, anti-sticking agent and product texture improvement in cosmetic formulations such as powders, creams and skin care products.
Zinc stearate is often used together with calcium, barium and magnesium stearate in the production of PVC thermal stabilizers. This combination prevents thermal decomposition and discoloration of PVC and is widely used in processes such as extrusion and plastic injection.
